An Analysis Study on Mathematics Learning Characteristics of Out-of-School Youth through STEAM Education with Mathematics and Music

The purpose of this study is to analyze the changes in mathematical learning through applying STEAM education according to social needs for out-of-school youth. For this purpose, we developed a teaching and learning model and program for mathematics and music STEAM education, and we implemented and analyzed the changes of affective area and problem-solving strategies.
The analysis results of characteristic in affective area are as follows: first, the activity-oriented class of mathematics and music STEAM education aroused interest in mathematics. Second, providing opportunities for mathematics and music STEAM education instilled a positive perception of the value of mathematics and STEAM education. Third, the autonomous communication-oriented learning environment of mathematics and music STEAM education improved confidence and motivation to learn in mathematics. The analysis results of the characteristic in problem-solving strategy are as follows: first, through the STEAM education with mathematics and music, a conceptual understanding of internally and externally dividing points was formed, and a given problem was expressed and solved in a formula. Second, the functional correspondence relationship was understood, and the given problem was described and solved with symbols associated with the function.
The suggestions of the study are as follows: first, based on the teaching and learning model and results of this study, various STEAM education programs for out-of-school youth should be developed and expanded to foster future competencies and provide new changes for out-of-school youth. Second, it can be used for research on the development of teaching and learning materials for convergence elective subjects in the high school credit system by referring to the mathematics and music convergence STEAM program of this study. As the subjects and fields of STEAM education are diversified and organized, students in need of receiving educational opportunities will be reduced, and there will be a world where the name of out-of-school youth and alternative education will not be necessary. Therefore, it is expected that development of teaching and learning programs created by interest in education of out-of-school youth will be used as an innovative idea in school education to achieve a virtuous cycle.

An Analysis of Korean Language Learners’ Understanding According to the Types of Terms in School Mathematics

The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics and types of errors in the conceptual image of Korean language learners according to the types of terms in mathematics that are the basis for solving mathematical word problems, and to prepare basic data for effective teaching and learning methods in solving the word problems of Korean language learners. To do this, a case study was conducted targeting four Korean language learners to analyze the specific conceptual images of terms registered in curriculum and terms that were not registered in curriculum but used in textbooks. As a result of this study, first, it is necessary to guide Korean language learners by using sufficient visualization material so that they can form appropriate conceptual definitions for terms in school mathematics. Second, it is necessary to understand the specific relationship between the language used in the home of Korean language learners and the conceptual image of terms in school mathematics. Third, it is necessary to pay attention to the passive term, which has difficulty in understanding the meaning rather than the active term. Fourth, even for Korean language learners who do not have difficulties in daily communication, it is necessary to instruct them on everyday language that are not registered in the curriculum but used in math textbooks. Fifth, terms in school mathematics should be taught in consideration of the types of errors that reflect the linguistic characteristics of Korean language learners shown in the explanation of terms. This recognition is expected to be helpful in teaching word problem solving for Korean language learners with different linguistic backgrounds.

A Study on the Validity of the Grit Test as a Tool for Identification of Mathematically Gifted Elementary Students

The purpose of this study was to find out whether the Grit test is valid as a test tool for Identification of mathematically gifted elementary students. For this study, we conducted Grit tests, Mathematical Problem Solving Aability Tests, Mathematical Creative Ability Tests, and Mathematically Gifted Behavior Characteristic Tests on 39 ordinary students at Seoul public elementary school and 20 mathematically gifted students at the Education Center for Gifted Education, and analyzed correlation with each test. In addition, we conducted a discriminant analysis to find out how the Grit test can accurately determine the members of the mathematically gifted student group and the ordinary student group. As a result of Pearson's correlation analysis, the Grit test was .521 with the Mathematical Problem Solving Ability Tests, .440 with the Mathematical Creative Ability Tests, and .601 with the Mathematically Gifted Behavior Characteristic Tests, according to significant positive correlation at p<.01. Through this, it can be confirmed that the Grit test has a high official validity as a tool for determining mathematically gifted students. As a result of conducting a discriminant analysis to confirm the classification discrimination ability of the elementary mathematically gifted student group and ordinary student group of the Grit test, Wilk's λ was .799(p<.001). We confirm that the Grit test is a significant variable in determining the mathematically gifted student group and ordinary student group. In addition, 64.4% of the entire group was accurately classified as a result of group classification through discriminant analysis. This shows that the Grit test can be actually used as a test tool to determine mathematically gifted elementary students.

Prospective Mathematics Teachers’ Perceptions of Collaborative Problem-posing as a Means to Promote Students’ Creativity and Character

This study aimed to examine how prospective mathematics teachers (PMTs) perceive collaborative problemposing (CPP) as a method to cultivate students’ creativity and character in mathematics education. This is to propose the introduction of CPP at the stage of preparatory math teacher education as one of the ways to reinforce the creativity and character education capacity of PMT), and to attempt to be an opportunity to actively utilize CPP in math teaching-learning in the school field for the education of students’ creativity and character. To achieve this objective, I designed PMTs taking the ‘Educational Theories for Teaching Mathematics’ course, required in the second year of university, to experience CPP tasks. Data were collected through questionnaires or interviews over three years on how PMTs recognized the CPP tasks as a tool to cultivate students’ creativity and character in secondary schools. The results of the study are as follows. First, PMTs recognized regardless of their CPP experience that CPP might have a positive impact on improving students’ ability to devise various ideas and that it positively influences students’ attitudes toward building interpersonal relationships, including teamwork, respect, and consideration. Second, the experience of PMTs participating in the CPP made them more positively aware that CPP is effective in improving students’ ability to elaborate on ideas. Third, the PMTs’ experience of participating in CPP led to a more positive perception of the impact of CPP on the students’ abilities and attitudes, namely, the students’ ability to elaborate on ideas and their inner attitudes toward individuals, including honesty, fairness, and responsibility, and the attitude of students regarding logically presenting their opinions and making rational decisions. Finally, if there are downsides to the offline environment, an online environment may be more beneficial.

A Case Studies for the Recovery of Mathematics Education: Focusing on the Utilization of Teachers' Mathematical Metaphors and the Structure of Teacher Discourse

The purpose of this study is to analyze the discourse structure of teachers that can help students participate in class by using mathematical metaphors that can arouse students' interest and motivation. In order to achieve this goal, we observed a semester class of a career teacher who practiced pedagogy that connects students' experiences with mathematical concepts to motivate students to learn and promote participation. Among the metaphors that the study target teachers used in a variety of mathematical concepts and problem-solving processes during the semester, we extracted the two class examples that can help develop teaching methods using metaphors. Representatively selected two classes are one class example using metaphors and, the other class example using metaphors and expanding and applying problems. As a result of analysis, the structure of teacher discourse that uses metaphors and expands and applies problems by linking students' experiences with mathematical content was found to help solve a given problem and elaborate mathematical concepts. As a result of the analysis, the discourse structure of teachers using mathematical metaphors based on communication with students could provide implications for the development of teaching methods for the recovery of mathematics education.

AI-Based Educational Platform Analysis Supporting Personalized Mathematics Learning

The purpose of this study is to suggest implications for mathematics teaching and learning when using AI-based educational platforms that support personalized mathematics learning. To this end, we selected five platforms(Knock-knock! Math Expedition, knowre, Khan Academy, MATHia, CENTURY) and analyzed how the AI-based educational platforms for mathematics reflect the three elements(PLP, PLN, PLE) to support personalized learning. The results of this study showed that although the characteristics of PLP, PLN, and PLE implemented on each platform varied, they were designed to form PLEs that allow learners to make their autonomous decisions about learning based on PLP and PLN. The significance of this study can be found in that it has improved the understanding and practicability of personalized mathematics learning with the AI-based educational platforms.

Development of Creative Problem-Solving Activities for Integrating Mathematics and Information Science: Focusing on the Hat Game for Mathematically Gifted Students

The future society requires not only knowledge but also various competencies, including creativity, cooperative spirit and integrated thinking. This research develops a program for integrating mathematics and information science to enhance important mathematical competencies such as problem-solving and communication. This program does not require much prior knowledge, can be motivated using everyday language and easy-to-access tools, and is based on creative problem-solving activities with multilateral cooperation. The usefulness and rigor of mathematics are emphasized as the number of participants increases in the activities, and theoretical principles stem from the matrix theory over finite fields. Moreover, the activity highlights a connection with error-correcting codes, an important topic in information science. We expect that the real-world contexts of this program contribute to enhancing mathematical communication competence and providing an opportunity to experience the values of mathematics and that this program to be accessible to teachers since coding is not included.
