The purpose of research is to analyze research trends and methods in a total of 709 studies published in five domestic mathematics education journals issued by Korea Citation Index (KCI) for the last 10 years (2003-2013) and strands in stages of research methods among mixed methods studies. As a result, the majority of articles in the five journals used either qualitative or quantitative methods and mixed methods research was less than 10 % of the total number of studies. The majority of mixed methods was research equally mixing qualitative and quantitative methods. The mixed methods research consisted primarily of quantitative with descriptive statistics and very little qualitative with conceptual framework based on theoretical background. Our results provide not only trends of the current research methods, but also implications for various future research paradigms in mathematics education.

In this paper, we introduce the history and the present status of the Mathematics Genealogy Project (MGP). The cases of David Hilbert and the first author were used to show how it works. As an example, we explain how to gain useful information such as the granting year of mathematics Ph. D degree holders, the title of dissertation, advisors and descendants from the MGP website. Through a survey of three different groups in MGP on 20~30 significant Korean mathematicians, we found that Korean records in the academic genealogy project are missing or poorly presented in the database of the MGP website. In conclusion, we found a way to improve the situation and provide instructions to submit our information to MGP. We expect our effort can help Korean mathematics and mathematicians to become better exposed to the world. It will help others to understand both the modern history and the future prospect of Korean mathematics.

In this paper we introduce mathematical modellings in teaching and learning differential equations which were adopted by 2009 revised curriculum. The textbook of ‘Advanced Mathematics II’ published in 2014 with one publisher includes the content of the second order differential equation by the power series method. This paper discusses the issue of the power series and gives an alternative method to explain problems of differential equation. Also, we found that the textbook of ‘Advanced Mathematics II’ used the mechanical system not electrical system in solving differential equation problems. Thus this paper suggests a method using an electric circuit in teaching and learning the first order differential equation. Finally we suggest some terminologies in the teaching and learning of differential equations.

Recently, the widespread usage of 3D-Printing has grown rapidly in popularity and development of a high level technology for 3D-Printing has become more necessary. Given these circumstances, effectively using mathematical knowledge is required. So, we have developed free web tools for 3D-Printing with Sage, for mathematical 3D modeling and have utilized them in college education, and everybody may access and utilize online anywhere at any time. In this paper, we introduce the development of our innovative 3D-Printing environment based on Calculus, Linear Algebra, which form the basis for mathematical modeling, and various 3D objects representing mathematical concept. By this process, our tools show the potential of solving real world problems using what students learn in university mathematics courses.

Recently, interdisciplinary relation is emphasized on and various models are proposed. Since group theory is one of the important areas of modern mathematics, all the mathematics teachers for secondary school are familiar with it. Group theory, the theory of symmetries, are effectively applied to music or arts. In this paper, we understand the approximation model for gwaeyul of geomungo group theoretically to show the relation between mathematics and music(Korean music, in particular). This paper, in fact, proposes a group theoretic approximation model for gwaeyul of geomungo. The materials like this will be of help to teachers who try to integrate mathematics to other areas.

The purpose of this study is to examine the transition of mathematical representation in Joseon mathematics, which is focused on numbers and operations, letters and expressions. In Joseon mathematics, there had been two numeral systems, one by chinese character and the other by counting rods. These systems were changed into the decimal notation which used Indian-Arabic numerals in the late 19th century passing the stage of positional notation by Chinese character. The transition of the representation of operation and expressions was analogous to that of representation of numbers. In particular, Joseon mathematics represented the polynomials and equations by denoting the coefficients with counting rods. But the representation of European algebra was introduced in late Joseon Dynasty passing the transitional representation which used Chinese character. In conclusion, Joseon mathematics had the indigenous representation of numbers and mathematical symbols on our own. The transitional representation was found before the acceptance of European mathematical representations.

In this paper, we obtain the step inteaching high school leve-based class utilizing cooperative learning lessons using level-type tutoring to improve academic achievement and mathematics attitudes. The details are as follows. First, we develop the teaching and learning model for the level-type instructional development and for the application to project work. Second, we seek to height academic achievement by applying the level-type work sheets in conjunction with cooperative learning. For this problem, we will focus on the following issues. First, how will you using level-type tutoring level TAI cooperative learning in order to improve academic achievement and develop the learning ability in mathematics? Second, how can you step utilizing TAI instructional level of cooperative learning in mathematics classes to improve mathematics learning attitudes? Third, how will you some reaction step work sheets utilizing level TAI cooperative learning of students for mathematics. Results of this study are as follows. First, in the experimental group compared to the comparison group was improved academic achievement. Second, in the experimental group compared to the comparison group learning attitudes could help. Third, the level of cooperative learning instructional model utilizing the TAI in the experimental group compared to the comparison group represents a significant response was seen.

It is necessary to realize in advance the lessons and knowhow about how to live, which humankind have developed, through learning to decrease the number of trial and error in our first trip to life. The big problem that present mathematical education is faced with is just only to place much importance on doing microscopic research ignoring macroscopic perspective, which results in the ineffectiveness of mathematics for contributing to life. The purpose of present study is to examine the way of living, classify methods of gaining an insight into life using macroscopic perspective, and develop a life model which can suggest a way of gaining an insight into life from external perspective. Also, this study explores a way of building a creative mathematical model for effective insight about life.
