It is important to make students do research for oneself. But the practice of inquiry activity is not easy in the mathematics education field. Intellectual curiosities of students are unpredictable. It is important to meet intellectual curiosities of students. We could get a sequence in the process solving a problem. This sequence was expressed in a form of the recurrence relation a_n = a_(n-1) + a_(n-3) (n≥ 4),a_1 = a_2 = a_3 =1. We tried to look for the general terms of this sequence. This sequence is similar to Fibonacci sequence, but the process finding the general terms is never similar to Fibonacci sequence. We can get two general terms expressed in different form after our a great deal of effort. We hope that this study will give the spot of education energy.

Most of mathematical terms in Korean are Sino-Korean words. It is necessary to find the efficient ways to teach Sino-Korean mathematical terms to mathematics teachers and students who dot not know Chinese characters well and use only Korean alphabet in mathematics. Especially, we have to avoid the inappropriate Sino-Korean words which can cause misconceptions and can distinguish homophones by Korean alphabet. We may use native Korean terms to do that and the national curriculum can play an important role. In this paper, we investigate the way of improving mathematics terms in Korea with concrete examples.

The aim of this study was to examine how analogical mapping articulation activity played a role in solving process in word problems. We analyzed the problem solving strategies and processes that the participating thirty-three 8th grade students employed when solving the problems through analogical mapping articulation activities, and also the characteristics of the thinking processes from the aspects of similarity. As a result, this study indicates that analogical mapping articulation activity could be helpful when the students solved similar word problems, although some of them gained correct answers through pseudo-analytic thinking. Not to have them use pseudo-analytic thinking, it might be necessary to help them recognize superficial similarity and difference among the problems and construct structural similarity to know the principle of solution associated with the problematic situations.

Instructional materials including problem situations or problems or tasks on real-life situations are considered as an important and significant factor to lead a successful math instruction. MiC Textbook is a representative one showing good examples and tasks including fluent realistic situations on the basis of the background of the Freudenthal`s theory. This study explores concretely and in detail the type of level of mathematical tasks, by the subject of MiC Textbook. To accomplish this, this study reconstructs and establishes an elaborated analysis framework using ``the cognitive demand level`` suggested by Stein, et, al. The cognitive demand level is comprized of four elements such as Memorization Tasks, Procedures Without Connections Tasks, Procedures With Connections Tasks, and Doing Mathematics Tasks. Memorization Tasks and Procedures Without Connections Tasks are considered as low level tasks, and Procedures With Connections Tasks and Doing Mathematics Tasks are as high level tasks. MiC Textbook is comprized of the four areas of ``number``, ``algebra``, ``geometry and measurement``, and ``data analysis and statistics``. This study deals with the tasks relevant to Function content dealt with in MiC 3 level Textbook, and explore the level of cognitive demands on each task.

This study examines the learning styles of freshmen enrolled in a college of science and engineering, and analyses the relationship between learning styles and academic achievement in mathematics to provide basic data for the teaching-learning methods, which are more suitable to learning styles of students. For the purpose of this research, a reliability analysis of Kolb`s LSI is applied to 282 freshmen enrolled in a college of science and engineering of the medium-sized university. The outcomes of this survey are followings. Firstly, students hold higher positions in the order of converger, assimilator, accommodator, diverger among 4 learning styles. Secondly, while there is a positive corelation between abstract conceptualization[AC] and academic achievement, there is a negative corelation between concrete experience[CE] and academic achievement. Thirdly, as for academic achievement in mathematics, converger is superior to assimilator and accommodator. Finally, the correlation between learning styles and academic achievement is different by demographic characteristics. Based on these results, this study suggests the necessity for various teaching- learning strategies, which are adjusted to both academic characteristics of mathematics and learning styles. Also, the need for teaching methods, which help students to develop effectively four learning cycles, is proposed.

This paper analyzed the relationship between middle school students` belief about understanding with regard to mathematical concepts, procedures, and applications of the procedures. In order to gain our purpose, the academic achievement results of midterm examination of 139 middle school students and the surveys about their beliefs about understanding, mathematical concepts, and mathematical procedures were collected. And the cross analysis and the frequency analysis of SPSS were conducted. The research results showed that students` belief about understanding are irrelevant to their academic achievements. And the percentage of the students who believe that they understand was almost the same with the percentage of the students who understand the procedures. But there were differences between the percentage of the students who believe that they understand and the percentage of the students who understand the concepts. Through these, it is conformed. Students` belief about understanding does not mean they understand mathematical concepts. They just can solve mathematical problems through mechanical procedures.
